An old shower door that leaks, sticks in its track, or has cloudy, stained glass does not have to stay. Signs it is time to replace your shower door
- Leaks: water on the floor after every shower, even with new sweeps and seals.
- Corroded or loose frame: pitted metal, wobbly rails, or a frame pulling away from the wall.
- Stuck or noisy sliding door: worn rollers, bent tracks, or a door that jumps off its track.
- Cloudy or etched glass: hard-water damage that no longer cleans off.
- Mold and mildew in the track: bottom tracks that trap water and are hard to keep clean.
- Cracked or chipped glass: stop using the door and keep others away from it until it is replaced.
- An outdated look: a brass frame or obscure glass that no longer fits your bathroom.
Not every problem needs a new door. A sagging or leaking door can sometimes be fixed with an adjustment or new parts. See our framed shower door repair and frameless shower door repair pages, or send photos and we will tell you which makes more sense.
Replacement options
- Frameless glass: the most popular upgrade. Heavy tempered glass, minimal hardware, and no bottom track to clean.
- Semi-frameless: a cleaner look than a full frame at a lower cost than frameless.
- Framed doors: a budget-friendly choice for standard alcoves and tubs.
- Sliding doors: a good fit for tubs and for bathrooms where a swinging door would hit the vanity or toilet. Ask about roller-style sliders with exposed hardware.
- Tub doors and panels: a sliding tub door, or a fixed glass panel in place of a shower curtain.
How shower door replacement works
- Send photos. Show us the whole shower or tub and the current door, and tell us what you want to change. We can give you a starting estimate from the photos.
- Measure. We measure the opening and check the walls, curb, and tile, including whether the walls are plumb.
- Remove the old door. We take out the old door, frame, and track, and clean off old caulk so the new glass sits on a clean surface.
- Install the new glass. Your new door is fitted, adjusted, and sealed so it opens smoothly and keeps water in the shower.
What to expect when the old door comes out
Removing an old frame can reveal screw holes, a line where the track sat, or tile that has faded differently around it. New glass usually covers some of this, and we will point out anything we notice before the work starts so there are no surprises. If tile or grout is loose or there is water damage behind the old track, it is best to fix that before new glass goes in.
Shower door replacement questions
Can a new door fit my existing shower opening?
Yes. Replacement glass is measured and cut to your existing opening, so you do not need to change your tile or tub. Out-of-square walls are accounted for when we measure.
Can I replace a framed door with frameless glass?
In most cases, yes. Frameless doors need solid support for the hinges, so we check the walls and the opening first. If frameless is not a good fit, semi-frameless is often a close alternative.
Can you replace a sliding tub door?
Yes. You can replace it with a new sliding door, a modern roller-style slider, or a fixed glass panel, depending on how you use the tub.
How much does shower door replacement cost?
It depends on the size of the opening, the style of the new door, the glass, and the hardware finish. A framed or sliding replacement costs less than a frameless enclosure. Send photos and approximate measurements for a free estimate.
What happens to my old shower door?
We remove the old door and frame as part of the job. Ask about haul-away when you request your estimate.
